The Penn's Landing Corporation (PLC) is a non-profit, quasi-public corporation that was established in 1970 to manage the publicly owned land on the central waterfront on behalf of the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As part of our management charge, Penn’s Landing Corporation produces over 70 festivals and events during each summer and operates the Blue Cross RiverRink (an ice skating rink) during the winter season. Over 1.5 million people visit Penn’s Landing each year. Overall, however, our mission is to promote the use and development of Philadelphia’s central waterfront. Listed below is a brief summary of the development projects that Penn’s Landing is involved in:
RECENTLY COMPLETED DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS: PIER 31-34 NORTH (the former East Central Incinerator Site) This eight-acre parcel is the northern most property that is controlled by Penn’s Landing. It is located on Columbus Boulevard at Spring Garden Street. Demolition of the East Central Incinerator was recently completed and all hazardous waste material has been cleaned up. Structural and foundation work is necessary before any project could be built, but the site is available for development.
PIERS 27 & 27 ½ - PENN’S LANDING “FESTIVAL PIER” Festival Pier is located south of Piers 31-34 North (the former East Central Incinerator Site) and is physically connected to it. In anticipation of the new development of Main Site, PLC moved all festivals and concerts to Festival Pier. The Blue Cross RiverRink (ice skating rink) has also been moved to this new location in the interim. The festival use on this pier is only temporary and will be moved back to the Main Site when it is fully developed. Once that occurs, Festival Pier together with Piers 31-34 North can be marketed either jointly or separately for development.
HYATT REGENCY PHILADELPHIA AT PENN’S LANDING Penn’s Landing Corporation is proud and excited to have the Hyatt Hotel on the waterfront. In December 2000 the Hyatt opened for business. It is a 22-story, 350 – guest room hotel equipped with a health/fitness center, a restaurant & bar area, conference rooms, ballrooms and meeting rooms all with views of the Delaware River. In addition to these amenities, the hotel has a 500 car-parking garage, which is open to the public.
DOCKSIDE ~ THE RESIDENCES AT PIER 30 Mr. Peter DePaul of the DePaul Group in Blue Bell, PA is the owner and developer of Dockside ~ The Residences at Pier 30. Dockside is the first newly constructed luxury apartment building to be built on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. The first round of tenants moved in August of 2002 and the building is reportedly approximately 70% occupied at this time. Dockside is a sixteen story, 242 ultra luxury studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartment building. There is ample off street parking for residents and visitors as well as a pool and fitness center/health club. Dockside is located on Pier 30 South on Columbus Boulevard at South Street.
CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS: INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE GARDEN Penn’s Landing Corporation is pleased to announce that we are moving ahead with the renovation of the International Sculpture Garden. The sculpture garden is located just south of the Hyatt Regency Hotel at Penn’s Landing and is the home to sculptures representing several countries around the world. The garden will undergo a redesign and expansion to the south. The look of the garden will be much greener than it currently is. After construction, areas between the Hyatt Hotel and the Penn's Landing Corporation Visitors Center will be cordoned to allow for the new grass to grow and the trees to settle. While pathways through the garden will remain, a lot of the granite and hard surfaces will become softer and friendlier with exception to the area around the Christopher Columbus Monument where a new grand stair has been designed. Nine international sculptures will be set in and around the garden which can be visited year round. Family picnics and parties will be welcomed in this tranquil setting as well as weddings and receptions. We hope that refreshing this area will encourage people to visit the sculptures and enjoy the river often throughout the entire year.
It should be noted at this time that throughout construction during the summer ’05 season the garden will not be open. However, the esplanade walkway along the river’s edge that connects the Hyatt to the PLC Visitors Center will be. Pedestrian traffic will not be interrupted
PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS In addition to other smaller improvements that PLC will make to a few of our parking areas this spring, a fresh start will be made to market Piers 9 & 11 North and the Former East Central Incinerator Site (Piers 31 – 34 North) for development. PLC has spent significant dollars during the past year on determining the structural integrity of each of these piers. This information is not only important for PLC but for future developers who endeavor to build on them. While all are in good working form, additional substructure supports will be necessary prior to any development.
PENN’S LANDING MAIN SITE The Main Site is bounded by Walnut Street to Market Street and Columbus Boulevard to the Delaware River and is the home to Penn’s Landing’s summer festivals and concerts and to the Independence Blue Cross RiverRink in the wintertime. In recent years both Penn’s Landing Corporation and the City of Philadelphia have discussed developing the 13-acre parcel into a family–oriented entertainment venue. Because Penn’s Landing is an open public space, the process to develop it will be too. Several measures have been taken to ensure that the public has been included in the process.
