INDEPENDENCE SEAPORT MUSEUM FALL SCHEDULE9/10/2004PHILADELPHIA, PA (August 16, 2004)--From interactive PECO Energy Family Programs at the Seaport* to engaging activities for adults, Independence Seaport Museum offers a schedule of special events guaranteed to bring our region's maritime history to life. Here's a listing of Seaport Happenings scheduled from September through January 2005. A TITANIC Loss Ongoing through Monday, January 31, 2005 See a selection of TITANIC-related items from one of the largest privately-held collections of TITANIC artifacts. Display includes photographs, documents, memorial items and personal belongings of passengers from the ill-fated voyage, as well as a model of TITANIC, on loan from Gary Kohs, President and CEO of Fine Arts Models. Artifacts courtesy of Craig Sopin, Member of the TITANIC International Society. Display is produced in collaboration with The Franklin Institute's exhibit, TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition. Behind-the-Scenes OLYMPIA Tours First Saturday of each month 12pm - 1pm Take a behind-the-scenes-tour of 1898 Cruiser OLYMPIA. Visit areas normally off limits to the public, including the engine and boiler rooms. Must be 12 and older to go on the tour. Reservations recommended, call 215.413.8658. FREE with admission or membership. *NOTE: This tour replaces the Behind-the-Scenes BECUNA Tours that took place during the Summer. Pirates! Saturday, September 4 Sunday, September 5 12pm - 5pm A PECO Family Saturday at the Seaport Program This is your last weekend to experience the wildly popular summer program, Pirates! Step into a room transformed into a pirate ship to see what pirates were really like. Try on costumes to dress up like famous pirates across the ages, then learn to duel and fire a cannon. Sign on to become a member of the crew and steer the ship to escape pirate hunters. Capture a vessel manned by privateers and convince them to surrender or face the consequences! FREE with admission or membership. OLYMPIA Living History Crew Weekend Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12 10am - 5pm Want to learn what life was like aboard this historic ship? Join the men of the Living History crew as they bring the flagship of the Battle of Manila Bay to life with six-pounder gun drills and engine room tours. Interact with members of the crew as they give sailor's life demonstrations. FREE with admission or membership. International Talk Like A Pirate Day Sunday, September 19 Arrrr Matey! Aye, it's International Talk Like A Pirate Day! So board your ship and sail to where X marks the spot at Independence Seaport Museum, and the first 100 lucky treasure seekin' pirates will collect a bag of every pirate's favorite snack, Pirate's Booty, courtesy of Robert's American Gourmet. Available on a first-come, first serve basis, while supplies last. Docent Training Open House Tuesday, September 21 6pm - 8pm Help us share the rich history of OLYMPIA and BECUNA with visitors—become a docent at Independence Seaport Museum! Join us for the evening to learn about becoming a docent and interacting with the many children and adults who visit each year. Meet with Education Department staff and talk with current volunteers to get the scoop on volunteering at the Seaport. We would love to welcome you aboard! Submarine Saturday A PECO Family Saturday at the Seaport Program Saturday, October 2 12pm - 5pm Come celebrate our annual submarine day at Independence Seaport Museum! Talk with "silent service" veterans who lived and worked aboard U.S. submarines, and learn what life was really like on one of these amazing boats. Tour the conning tower, sonar room, and engine rooms with the men who worked there. Watch videos about submarines in our galley, where the men of BECUNA watched films to pass the time. Learn how submarines submerge, and make your own model submarine to take home. FREE with admission or membership. African Mariner Days Co-sponsored with ODUNDE Saturday, October 23 11am - 2pm Explore the world of the ancient mariner by learning the skills sailors needed to sail around the globe. See how James Forten, an African American sail-maker, had a profitable business in Philadelphia in the 1700's. Test navigation equipment and participate in a concert hall performance of music and dance from cultures around the world with a maritime heritage. Boy Scout Workshop Saturday, October 2 10am (Knot tying) and 11am (Orienteering) Fulfill your Cub and Boy Scout requirements for knot tying and orienteering in this two-part, hour-long workshop. At 10am learn important knots such as the clove hitch, bowline and the challenging, monkey's fist. Then, at 11am try techniques in navigation and orienteering. All activities go towards badge requirements. Registration necessary; call 215.413.8630. Cost for scouts and leaders: $6 per program or $8 for both. Nautical Archeology A PECO Family Saturday at the Seaport Program Saturday, November 6 12pm - 5pm Explore the world beneath the waves by doing things that nautical archeologist would do. Map a site and hunt for a "shipwreck" and play a game to repair an underwater pipeline using submersibles. FREE with admission or membership. Compare the food of today's Navy with what was on the menu on Spanish-American War Cruiser OLYMPIA and World War II Submarine BECUNA. Play games in the galley, just like BECUNA's sailors did, and make a hardtack magnet to take home. FREE with admission or membership. Folk Art Badge Girl Scout Program Saturday, December 4 9am - 12pm Explore the folk arts of the sea by learning how sailors made crafts to keep busy. Listen to old sea shanties and find out how stories have been passed down for generations. Discover how old photographs can tell stories too. Then try making your own sailor craft to take home. Tropical Paradise Saturday, January 15, 2005 12pm - 5 pm Come in out of the cold and imagine warm island breezes and swaying palm trees as you participate in activities related to maritime island cultures.
